Staying Present In Times Of Waiting ~ My Journey With Cancer

What, another non crafting post...yes, The Rebel Blogger is at it again!

I am living with cancer.
It can not be seen, but non-the-less, still lurking in the shadows.
I will not succumb to it's claws without a damn good fight.

The ever present fatigue hides in the shadows also.
I will not succumb to it's claws either.

My experience with cancer has meant I don't take anything, least of all life itself, for granted.
I appreciate and treasure every single day because I know how precious life is.
I no longer greet each day with careless acceptance.

It has changed my routines, and relationships.
It has caused a financial impact.
It has changed my physical appearance.
Cancer has been a life-changing experience on many levels.

But...
I know I would be a completely different person if not for the cancer.
I have achieved a certain 'calm wisdom'.
I am able to see things in a 'different view'.
My entire perspective has changed and I am thinking my life in new ways.

For the past year, it has been a waiting game.
Wait for the results of this test and that test, wait to see if the cancer grows...wait, wait, wait!
I do not like to wait. Who does?
I think it is a waste of time.
It is an annoyance, a negative, something to be avoided.

As I look back from the very beginning of my journey, I have experienced a 'seasons' of waiting.
Each time I waited for additional results, my mind and body prepared for the next shock, the next bad news.
This did not lead to hopeful waiting.
It only lead to feelings of anxiety.

Sometimes we allow ourselves the luxury of waiting to watch the sunset so we can soak in the beauty.
Or to the joyful waiting-for nine miraculous months-while a child forms in the womb.
I tend to forget that waiting can be a thing of beauty. A gift. Even a blessing.

In Sue Monk Kidd's book, When the Heart Waits, she describes the gifts that can come to us in waiting:
The fullness of one’s soul evolves slowly. We’re asked to go within to gestate the newness God is trying to form; we’re asked to collaborate with grace. That doesn’t mean that grace isn’t a gift. Nor does it mean that the deliberate process of waiting produces grace. But waiting does provide the time and space necessary for grace to happen. Spirit needs a container to pour itself into. Grace needs an arena in which to incarnate. Waiting can be such a place, if we allow it.
As I continue to wait in anticipation, I have felt that great work taking place within my own container and I have now provided the arena in my soul for grace!

I have learned to stay present in the ever constant times of waiting!
I am surviving!

Always Face The Sun ~ Watercoloring with Distress Markers

Hi guys and gals!

I am very fortunate to be able to spend my summer days outside.

Where I can enjoy our beautiful flowers.
And those that come to visit our bird feeder...the neighbor's chickens, lots and lots of birds, the squirrels, also the occasional turkey and deer!
Who all seem just as excited for summertime as I am!

Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you
~ Maori Proverb

I think this quote is a great one.
It encourages us to focus on the positive and reminds us that, in doing so, negativity will be a thing of the past (in the shadows).

For me, this is most clear when dealing with my cancer.

I try to remain positive and the sunshine filled days of summer is a huge blessing for me.

This card I created for a friend made me think of that proverb...

Handmade card Always Face The Sun by cindywirl.blogspot.com

I colored the Wendy Vecchi Garden Art stamp with Distress Markers on Ranger Watercolor paper.

The sentiment stamp is Sky's the Limit from MME.

The die cut above that is Spellbinders Lattice Accents cut in half and adorned with natural twine.

I used a punch around the page Vintage Doily by Martha Stewart for accent on the top and bottom of the card.

What it comes down to is this: I have a choice and I have a choice on how to react to it.

I choose to accentuate the positive and face the sun!

Remember to take time to create your life!

New York City Excursion

A short prologue:

I had just found out about my thyroid cancer shortly before taking a bus trip in 2011 to New York City.
The first consultation appointment was made at Cleveland Clinic with a specialist but I had not seen anyone yet. I did not know the extent or involvement at this time. All the very important details were unknown.
So, needless to say, I owned a mysterious and burdensome dark shadow over me during this excursion.

In a previous post on Nov 15, 2013, I mentioned epic emotions. I had experienced a few during this trip. I would like to share a couple of those moments with you...

While I was sitting on the bus beside my then 80 yr. old father, I remember watching him breath as he slept.
How he must feel to have lived such a long blessed life! Then I got to wondering, will I live a long blessed life just like he has?

(By the way, I'm thinkin he looks pretty darn good for his age!!)

New York City Lights

I also remember amazingly gazing at all the sights and lights of the city, trying to soak it ALL up!
I wanted so desperately to keep every bit of detail of the city in my memory, forever and ever!

Onward...

These are some what better camera shots of a couple of the layouts I created from that trip...

I fussy cut the chalkboard paper and stars. Don't know the name of the paper, as it was given to me by my niece, Shawna, along with a box full of other scrapbooking goodies! Shawna has got some artistic talent of her own but I'll leave that for another post!
The title was cut from Martha Stewart Alphabet punches. I added actual ticket stubs! Pink Paislee Artisan Chipboard arrows were added also.

I like the stitching around the border. I need to make use of my sewing machine more often!

Next...

I love the puffy gold star banner and the 12x12 paper, die cut to look like a stamp! And of course you know me, can't remember any of the ingredients. I do know the border punch is from Martha Stewart.

I cannot get the hang of taking photos of scrapbooking pages.
I have tried and tried to get photos of some of my older layouts to look half ways decent and at least presentable.
They look all warped and cockeyed! Plus the lighting is not even around the whole layout.
I am definitely doing something wrong, GRRR!!

Well, that's another story from my heart for now.
Hope you will come back soon to visit me again!

Happy Crafting!

You Are Not Alone ~ Living With Cancer

Cancer is a monumental experience that we would all like to convey to others.
The written story is only as compelling as the words make it.

Every cancer patient has a touching, heart tugging story to tell and it will always be a compelling experience in their mind, body and soul.

This writer's story may not be 'compelling', finding the proper words have been frustrating, but none the less, these are my feelings, thoughts from MY SOUL.

Fear is the root of so many. Fear of not being liked. Fear of making the wrong decision. Fear of drawing negative attention. Fear of being judged. Fear of overreaching. After debating with my own inner self and much consideration, I have finally made the decision to speak about my cancer again.
NOT for pity nor sympathy but out of EMPATHY.

My wish is not to convey acknowledging my cancer is any more 'special'  than others, also my writings is not the intention to anger or hurt.

I did not write this post in a day or even two....it was a few days of careful thinking, even hesitating clicking publish.

I am not a crusader by any means. Cindy's Paper Creation is a personal blog that is relatively new. It does not entail many following.

However, if this post reaches out and TOUCHES THE HEART for just that ONE person where cancer has invaded their life, and may have had feelings of loneliness at some point....and this helps one know they are never alone.... My wishful purpose has been done.
_________________________________________________________________

On the day of my tests this past March, I was told my total body (PET) scan was negative. Hurray!
The very important blood test was sent out to California on March 8th.
I was so elated, I wanted to share my story publicly. So I did a post on 3-12-13.

I did the happy dance in March for 2 weeks after my tests.
I then got the call....

My thyroglobulin tumor marker was elevated. It is a blood test to monitor for thyroid cancer recurrence. Normal range is 0-3. Mine was 95.5
Doctor said we will recheck in September. Those results came back at 95.3. I need to be tested again in March 2014.

So, what does that mean?
It means no tumors but the cancer cells are still present. They are so very minute, unable to be seen on scans.
Wow, what a magnificent test!

Tall Cell Carcinoma has a high rate of recurrence but is slow growing.

Okay...so now what?
I am no longer in remission, I once again have the C word.

I was assured the only place in my body where the cancer are living currently is the neck area.

I don't want to have to wait till it grows and shows it's ugly presence on a scan. Zap it now with another treatment of the high dose radioactive iodine!
I can handle the month long prep, having absolutely no metabolism, bone pain, nausea, isolation and everything else that goes along with it.
Alas, the explanation from the medical professionals...is becoming toxic and the possible side effect of leukemia is of concern with another treatment at this time.

I have been told "you'll be fine".
I am fine if you compare me to someone with pancreatic cancer.
I am fine if you compare me to someone else's cancer that is far worse than mine.
BUT, if you compare myself to the healthy me I was before my cancer robbed and rattled that health away, I am not fine.

These words were spoken to me..."you are dwelling and worrying over it".
I have difficulty erasing that comment from my mind.
Henceforth, a sort of guilt on my part.

I have become silent in the emotional realm. I sometimes feel alone with my thoughts.

The "how are you feeling?" occurs rarely now-a-days.
On that note, my simple reply "I'm doing okay" doesn't deem adequate either.

Is it my fault? Probably so. I have made it my choice to speak of the C word as little as possible.

The distant online stranger with a common bond has become my confidant...a change that I have learned to accept. To help cope with cancer's uncertainty, and the emotional burden it carries.
To be able to speak without having the feeling of 'dwelling' or 'worrying'.

Am I ungrateful or bitter or resentful?...Hell no!
I have received an abundance of blessings to be feeling such nonsense!
Besides, it's a total waste of my time!

Someone once asked me "Aren't you happy the tumor marker test from March to September went down 0.2 ?"

Really?! I STILL have CANCER.

I repeat to myself every day "Maybe it will slowly leave my body. You need to stay positive, have faith and pray!"

As anyone dealing with cancer will attest to, whether it's active or in remission, those multitude of mixed emotions can at times feel epic. They can show up at a moments notice and they can disappear at the drop of a hat. We have been handed that right, we are the warriors. We will stand up and continue to fight the battle.

Stand Up To Cancer

Manifesto

We used to have such crazy dreams,
The kind of dreams that brought us together, made us not mere mortals, but a movement.

We used to dream we’d get to the moon.
And we were crazy enough, fanatical enough, relentless enough, to get there.

We dreamed we’d split the atom.
Make smallpox and polio whispers from forgotten history books.
Make technology infinite, individual.
Connect the world.

All the unbelievable and the impossible,
all the can’t do and the never will, we overwhelmed them, we overpowered them, we conquered them.
They said no and we, well,
We said yes.
We stood up.
We stood up and changed the world.

Stand up when everybody else sits down
Stand up when it’s easier to turn away
Stand up for everyone who can’t rise anymore

When the answer seems impossible, stand up
When the dream is right within our reach, stand up
When the powerful refuse your call, stand up

The moment is now and the time has come to stand up.
One out of every two men
One out of every three women
will face these diseases we call cancer.

Our sisters, our brothers, our fathers, our mothers,
our husbands, our wives, our children.
Our very best friends and those we’ve yet to meet.

One person every minute, one person in a moment gets lost, gets stolen, gets taken away.

We are a tapestry of lives touched and brought together by a terrorist we can actually find.
And in the time it’s taken to read this, three more Americans have died.

Unforgivable.

This is where the end of cancer begins.

When together we become a force unmistakable.
A movement undeniable.
A light that cannot dim.

When we take our wild impossible dreams
And make them possible
Make them true

When together we rise as one
When we stand up
When we Stand Up To Cancer.

Fighting cancer is a challenge but the greater challenge is learning to live with it's uncertainty.

I  would like to dedicate this post,
To all those fighting the battle, to those winning the battle and to all those that have lost the battle.
May you forever have the power of positive energy, spiritual or in other respects
and may you never have to feel alone in your battle.

With Love,

Purrrr-fect!

My Purrrr-fect Special Kitty?!

I have heard of some very special dogs that are able to 'sense' and warn their human epileptic owners before a seizure is about to happen.
I do believe that some animals have so much love, and a special bond with their owners that this 'sense' is real.

Chloe was not a real lovey, dovey cat once upon a time.
She did not like to be held and favored being a loner.
She would let you pet her on her terms only.

She would sleep with me occasionally, more so in the winter.
And if she did...only by my legs or at the corner of the bed.

We noticed some gradual changes in her taking place in the fall of 2011, around the time I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in October of that same year.

All of a sudden Chloe started to sleep by my head.

If I sat down, there she was, on my lap!
We could pet her without her getting that 'attitude' and taking off to be alone!
Her demeanor has improved greatly, especially these past few months!

Today, she is no longer that same cat!
Chloe is now my shadow!!
She begs me for undivided attention by 'getting into my face', and sitting in front of the computer screen.

If it gets past 10 pm... she is meowing at me to go to bed!

She has this routine when I get into bed...first she is on my chest staring down at me, purring away, rubbing my face.
I think she would let me rub her all night!
Then...when I have had enough, she will lay on my pillow with her head on my neck.
Still purring all the while.
She now will not move for nothing!

It is a rare occasion that I can get a good nights sleep without my shadow Chloe by my neck!

I created this layout of Chloe about a month ago.
The picture of her face was taken a couple of years ago.
For some reason (due to my lack of photographic skills!) her fur looks tan, but she is silky white!!

Could Chloe be one of those special pets and have that 'sense' ?
I'm thinking so!
